    ASYMMETRIC PRICE RELATIONSHIPS IN THE U.S. BROILER INDUSTRY

    This study presents a testing methodology to analyze potential price asymmetries among the farm, wholesale, and retail levels of the U.S. broiler industry. Lag length, direction of causality and power of the integrators in the industry have allowed the wholesale price to become the center, causal price in the market. Asymmetric price transmissions, however, are limited.     We examine two basic assumptions of kinetic theory-- binary collisions and molecular chaos-- using numerical simulations of sheared granular materials. We investigate a wide range of densities and restitution coefficients and demonstrate that kinetic theory breaks down at large density and small restitution coefficients.     Planning for a Healthier Birth and Beyond: Strategies Women Use to Manage Gestational Diabetes

    Gestational diabetes, the most frequent pregnancy complication in the United States, puts mother and infant at risk for serious medical problems that can have lifelong sequelae. Maternal glucose control is crucial to a successful pregnancy outcome and often requires the mother to follow a strict medical regimen. Authors of previous studies have described the experience of gestational diabetes as stressful, overwhelming, and anxiety producing; and an association between maternal stress and glucose control has been documented. Authors of nursing studies have found that repeating information and providing support are essential when working with gestational diabetes patients, whose learning ability is reduced by stress. However, few studies have examined how women perceive the experience of gestational diabetes, and understanding the patient\u27s perception of a stressor is essential for effective nursing intervention. Using grounded theory methodology, this study generated an emerging nursing theory, planning for a healthier birth and beyond, that provides a framework in which to interpret the strategies women use to manage a pregnancy complicated by gestational diabetes. The findings could provide nurse clinicians and researchers with a richer understanding of how women experience gestational diabetes, and potentially serve as a basis for developing proactive nursing interventions to improve treatment adherence and better help women manage their lives with the condition

    Self-concepts of Career Level II and III Teachers and Career Ladder Eligible Teachers in the Public Schools of Tennessee

    The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a significant difference in the self concept of Career Level II and III teachers and teachers who are eligible to apply but have not elected to participate in the Career Ladder Program in the public schools of Tennessee. The technique of causal-comparative research was used in this study. The Tennessee Self Concept Scale (TSCS), developed by William Fitts, was selected as the appropriate instrument for use in this study. The TSCS is a versatile instrument that measures ten dimensions related to self concept: total level of self esteem, self criticism, identity, self satisfaction, behavior, physical self, moral-ethical self, personal self, family self, and social self. Demographic data were also collected to obtain information concerning the personal characteristics of the teachers. A total of 1,115 surveys were sent to teachers in the public schools of the seven districts of Tennessee, stratified by whether they were career Level II and III or eligible. A total of 808 useable responses were returned. This sample represented 408 Career Level II and III teachers and 400 eligible teachers. Data analyses and interpretation indicated that statistically significant differences existed between Career Level II and III teachers and eligible teachers on all ten measures of self concept. All the null hypotheses were rejected. Eligible teachers were determined to have a significantly lower total self esteem score when compared to Career Level II and III teachers. Career Level II and III teachers indicated a higher score on all nine subscales, as well as the total self esteem score. However, the self concept scores of eligible teachers were still above the norm group mean. Inspection of Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) results revealed that no significant differences in mean total self esteem by educational level were found. One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) for mean total self esteem by age, followed by a Scheffe\u27s post hoc multiple comparison test, indicated individuals aged 25-44 and aged 45-54 were significantly different on total self esteem as were individuals aged 25-44 and aged 55 and older. No significant difference was found between age 45-54 and age 55 and older. A t-test for independent sample for mean total self esteem indicated there was a significant difference in the total self esteem of males and females with females having a higher self esteem

    Long Range Correlation in Granular Shear Flow II: Theoretical Implications

    Numerical simulations are used to test the kinetic theory constitutive relations of inertial granular shear flow. These predictions are shown to be accurate in the dilute regime, where only binary collisions are relevant, but underestimate the measured value in the dense regime, where force networks of size Îľ\xi are present. The discrepancy in the dense regime is due to non-collisional forces that we measure directly in our simulations and arise from elastic deformations of the force networks. We model the non-collisional stress by summing over all paths that elastic waves travel through force networks. This results in an analytical theory that successfully predicts the stress tensor over the entire inertial regime without any adjustable parameters

    Genetic and Modifiable Risk Factors Contributing to Cisplatin-Induced Toxicities

    Effective administration of traditional cytotoxic chemotherapy is often limited by off-target toxicities. This clinical dilemma is epitomized by cisplatin, a platinating agent that has potent antineoplastic activity due to its affinity for DNA and other intracellular nucleophiles. Despite its efficacy against many adult-onset and pediatric malignancies, cisplatin elicits multiple off-target toxicities that can not only severely impact a patient’s quality of life, but also lead to dose reductions or the selection of alternative therapies that can ultimately affect outcomes. Without an effective therapeutic measure by which to successfully mitigate many of these symptoms, there have been attempts to identify a priori those individuals who are more susceptible to developing these sequelae through studies of genetic and nongenetic risk factors. Older age is associated with cisplatin induced ototoxicity, neurotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Traditional genome-wide association studies have identified single nucleotide polymorphisms in ACYP2 and WFS1 associated with cisplatin-induced hearing loss. However, validating associations between specific genotypes and cisplatin-induced toxicities with enough stringency to warrant clinical application remains challenging. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge with regard to specific adverse sequelae following cisplatin-based therapy with a focus on ototoxicity, neurotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, myelosuppression and nausea/emesis. We discuss variables (genetic and nongenetic) contributing to these detrimental toxicities, and currently available means to prevent or treat their occurrence

    One of the problems of the investigator of parasitic fungi is that of obtaining ascospore stages of the organism in cultures derived from diseased plant parts. Such cultures often produce mycelium or mycelium and conidia without the corresponding ascospore stage. With the advent of our knowledge of heterothallism such sexual stages have often been grown artificially by the mating of self-sterile strains. A few cases of heterothallism, in which the sexes are segregated on separate thalli, are also known. Finally, with homothallic fungi that fruit with difficulty in ordinary culture some advance on the problem has been made by students of the nutritional requirements of fungi, particularly under the leadership of Lilly (3). These workers have found that supplementation of of the substrate with vitamins often leads to fruition in cultures that have hitherto been considered sterile or lacking in one or more spore stages
